A2 CofC Training Course

Earn your A2 Certificate of Competency in the United Kingdom, and take your drone to the sky for either £99 or £199+VAT!

From January 1st 2021, holding an A2 CofC will allow you to fly in the A2 subcategory and the A1 Transitional subcategory of the Open Category.

Do you have a drone up to *500g?

No problem, you can fly this where there are no uninvolved people present within the area of flight; and there can be no flight within 150m horizontally of residential, commercial, industrial, or recreational areas. If this describes you, and where and when you use your drone, then you’re not required to do anything else! Just meet the requirements of the Drone and Model Aircraft Registration and Education Service. Happy and safe flying..

Want more freedom? Complete an A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC) and you can fly as close as 50m horizontally of uninvolved people (A2 subcategory). There is no limitation on proximity to buildings.

Having an A2 CofC, means that when operating in the A2 subcategory (fly close to people) you will be able to fly a C2-class aircraft down to a minimum distance of 30m horizontally from uninvolved people. From 1st January 2021 class C2 aircraft must have a low speed mode, when flying in this mode under an A2 CofC you will be allowed down to 5m horizontally from uninvolved persons.

Really Important Notes

The A2 CofC is a theoretical examination only, but it’s predicated on a ‘building block’ process of training and testing which is listed in the following paragraph. There are no practical flight test requirements for the A2 CofC.

Prior to taking the examination, you are required to have completed the following ‘building blocks’: Successful completion of the CAA’s ‘Drone and Model Aircraft’ online training course for basic remote pilot competency and the associated competency test, and be in possession of the ‘Flyer ID’ number associated with that test; completion of a period of practical flight training, either under the guidance of an RAE or under ‘self-monitored’ circumstances, conducted within the operating conditions of subcategory A3 but simulating the operating situations associated with the A2 subcategory.

You MUST be able to declare, as part of the examination, that you have completed the above building blocks or you will be unable to complete the examination that day.

*This is only for transitional aircraft purchased before 31st December 2020 and only lasts until 30th June 2022. Any aircraft purchased after 31st December 2020 must be under 250g to enjoy this freedom.
