Drone License

Do you need a drone license?

Drones, once reserved for military use or large government organizations, are now a technology used for a wide range of industrial, commercial and even recreational applications. As uptake of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) continues to expand, there’s naturally some confusion about the rules and regulations.

Most people know that some form of ‘drone pilot license’ is required, but do you know who actually needs one? And if you were looking for a qualification, would you know how to get one?

At Consortiq, this area is our specialty!

What is a drone license?

Technically the term ‘drone license’ is misleading. In the USA there is no such thing as a drone license. However, there is a necessary permission put in place by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) to regulate safety.

Who needs a drone license?

Currently, not everyone needs a license to legally fly. If you are flying a consumer drone for recreational purposes, then you do not need a license. Your drone however must be under 55lbs in weight, and you must follow the rules. You cannot fly in certain types of restricted airspace or near airports without permission. You must also ensure that your flight does not interfere with, and gives way to, any manned aircraft.

If you are going to be paid to fly a drone for commercial purposes, then you must hold an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.

How can I get a drone license?

With an Unmanned Aircraft Qualification (UAQ) from Consortiq, you can provide evidence to your employers, insurance and authorities that you have been deemed sufficiently competent in the theoretical aspects of drone operations. While also preparing you for your FAA Part 107 Aeronautical Knowledge Test, this certification will equip you with the knowledge and skills to secure wider project work.

To gain a license for flying a drone for commercial purposes, you will need to pass the FAA Part 107 Aeronautical Knowledge Test at an FAA-approved knowledge testing center. At Consortiq, we can teach you how to fly safely and efficiently. We also offer different training options tailored to your needs.

If your company wants to undertake a commercial drone job quickly, our Part 107 Essentials Course can give you the knowledge you need in just two days. We also offer customized flight training for those who want to learn how to fly safely in both GPS and ATTI mode from the very beginning.
